The course will also cover challenges we face in sustaining and conserving healthy oceans for the future. For example, we will learn how issues such as bycatch and climate change are affecting ocean species and how we can better conserve out charismatic marine megafauna. What better place to take such a class than on a ship?! This course is designed to introduce students to the diversity of marine life and integrate current issues and practical activities to teach biological and ecological concepts.
Topics covered include basics of ecology and evolution, the marine environment, taxonomic classification of marine organisms, survey of major marine ecosystems, and marine conservation. Freshman Credit Elective Dec The HNRS is an orientation class, but it's not an intro class that tells you about the resources of the honors program. It should be that way because I know nothing about honors. Instead, it's a stupid discussion about sustainability once a week.
It's really an english class because you have to read articles some can be 20 pages and write a page essay about it weekly; a waste of time. Unfortunately, it's required by honors program. It's really easy and you can BS your essays if you want which i did half the time.
Just suck it up and go it literally takes like minutes a week. Even though I hated it, lots of people liked it alot so go into the class open-minded. Freshman Credit General Ed Feb I don't know much about him as a teacher. For HNRS , he doesn't talk much. When he does, though, he'll stand out in a crowd. He speaks loudly and clearly, stays on topic very well, and puts in a lot of work to keep up with his students. Freshman A Required Support Dec We have to write useless papers every week that our TAs don't even read One class he came over to our group and he totally targeted me If you aren't insanely liberal I'm liberal but not extremely so then he makes you feel like a soul-less person who doesn't care about the world.
I feel so uncomfortable and even afterwards my TA asked me if I was okay cause he "went after me a bit". Honors kids sorry that this is your intro to the program - its really not as bad as this class makes it seem.
Sophomore Credit Elective Jul He is the cutest little man I have ever seen and is super nice. He is very helpful, dedicated, and passionate about his work and courses. I would highly recommend taking his class. Sophomore A General Ed Feb This guy looks like an alien.
There is way too much work for this class to be two units, there are 10 essays and a group project. Sucks to be you if you are in the honors program because you have to take this ridiculous class. Just lie on the microthemes and say you care about sustainability and you will get a good grade. Sophomore B General Ed May Senior A Required Support Jul I took Dr.
He was an amazing professor. Hands down one of the best I've had at Cal Poly. He adjusted his class to teach us about the histories of the places that we visited while on the cruise.
Not only was he a great professor in class, but he was awesome in port too. He hung out with the students and was equally as adventurous as us, even going to the trouble to help set up fun trips for us in the different ports we visited. Overall a great professor and a great guy.
I hope he continues to participate in the Cal Poly at Sea program and if you have the opportunity you should definately participate in this program as well and take a Trice class. Senior B General Ed Apr Awesome professor, I had him on Poly Sea. Down to earth, fun, but a great teacher.
Sophomore A General Ed Jan The class is a ton of reading, but you just come to class and have a discussion about it. Overall a really cool class. Sophomore A General Ed Mar I honestly really loved this class and Dr. He is a very interesting guy who facilitated a lot of discussions and made you feel very comfortable talking in class. This class is reading based but the readings are interesting and the books are not expensive!
As long as you keep up with your log, you'll be fine. I loved this class and it was one of my favorites that I've taken at Cal Poly. He is very straightforward about what you have to do and as long as you try, he will acknowledge that.
I learned a lot about social movements and things that are relevant to me as a student who likes to get involved. Sophomore A General Ed Nov Amazing teacher. He literally changed my life with this class. So worth it, take it if you can! He is so smart, opens your eyes to so much of the world. Junior B General Ed Nov I love this man. Such a legit class, two microthemes page long mini essays due a week. Class is also based on discussion, so if you turn in microthemes, come to class, and contribute to the conversations, you'll get a solid grade.
